The legendary South Indian percussion master returns to Vancouver for one night only!

This program features a cross-section of the old and new including South Indian classical pieces from the 18th century and original compositions of Sankaran himself. The highlight of every concert though is the tani avartanam (mridangam solo) which allows Sankaran to dazzle audiences with his rhythmic prowess and always ends in a standing ovation.

Trichy Sankaran, the living legend of mridangam leads an ensemble that includes a mix of virtuosic Carnatic and jazz musicians, including Raman Kalyan (Carnatic flute), Sankaran's long-time student Curtis Andrews (percussion) and Jared Burrows (electric guitar).

Trichy Sankaran is recognized as one of the greatest living players of the mridangam, the main percussion instrument of South Indian music (also known as Carnatic music). Since arriving in Canada in 1971, Sankaran has traversed the globe sharing his music and skills in various genres including gamelan, African, jazz, contemporary classical, improv, and world music contexts.

Interweave Ensemble brings together nine extraordinary musicians whose artistic roots span Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Indigenous Turtle Island.

Drawing upon the depth of repertoire, knowledge, and experience each musician brings, Interweave creates a space where distinct musical traditions meet on equal terms. Rather than requiring artists to compromise their musical identities or conform to a common musical system, the ensemble celebrates their unique strengths through traditional repertoire, original compositions, and collective improvisation.

Brought together by percussionist and composer Curtis Andrews (Turtle Island/Canada), the ensemble features Feven Kidane (trumpet, bass – Ethiopia), Russell Wallace (voice, percussion – Lil'wat Nation/Turtle Island), Kocasalle Dioubate (kora, percussion, voice – Guinea), Kurai Mubaiwa (mbira, voice, percussion – Zimbabwe), Israel “Toto” Berriel (percussion, voice – Cuba), Zhongxi Wu (sheng, suona – China), Marjan Alekhamis (kamancheh – Iran), and Shruti Ramani (voice – India).
